Brougham Castle is a medieval fortress located in the Eden Valley, Cumbria, near Penrith, England. It stands proudly on the banks of the River Eamont.

It was constructed in the early 13th century by Robert de Vieuxpont, a powerful Norman baron, and served as a defensive stronghold during the turbulent times of the Scottish Wars of Independence.

However, the castle’s history is not limited to its ownership. Brougham Castle played a significant role in various historical events, such as the Wars of Scottish Independence and the English Civil War. In the 1930s it came into possession of the Ministry of Works (now English Heritage). A stream of visitors came started to visit during the advent of buses and cars and today you can come to wander through it’s history with a small museum near the entrance gate.

For such a small ruins the name had obviously carried far. In just the time I was there on a weekday morning I saw a steady stream of people wandering through and finding fascination. Many from far and wide around the world, seeking a monument of British History.
