Sete Cidades, a picturesque destination located on the island of São Miguel in the Azores archipelago, is a captivating natural wonder that promises breathtaking views, diverse activities, and rich cultural experiences.
Known for its stunning twin lakes—Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul—this area is often referred to as one of the most beautiful locations in Portugal. In fact it is one of the 7 natural wonders of Portugal and when you first set eyes on it you can see why. It gave me a big one of those ‘wow’ moments.
I wanted to discover more, from the top of the crater to within it amongst the water.
Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about visiting Sete Cidades, from its historical significance and natural beauty to local cuisine and accommodations.
Location and Name
Situated in the western part of São Miguel, Sete Cidades is a huge volcanic crateralmost 5km acroos, that houses two striking lakes, intermingles, each with its own unique color. One green, one blue. Hence the names Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul.
The name Sete Cidades translates to Seven Cities. The actual reason for this is lost in legends but it derives from the latin ‘Insula Septem Civitatum’ which means land of the seven tribes/peoples. This could really mean one community with 7 factions.
There is a story of 7 bishops setting up a christian community each that could have created the name Sete Cidades.
Legend of The 2 Coloured Lakes
One of the biggest legends that has come from the 2 coloured lakes of Sete Cidades involves a King, a princess and a shepherd. In summary:
The local king had a beautiful princess daughter who he forbid to speak to anybody. As she grew older she sneaked out of the castle and discovered a shephered playing the flute and for a while she hid, watched and listened. Eventually they got to know each other and fell in love.
The Shepherd one day got the courage to ask the king for his daughters hand in marriage. The king refused and banished the shepherd from the castle.
The daughter went to see the shephered one last time to say they would neer see each other again. They both cried and cried and cried. Her eyes were green, his eyes were blue so each of ther tears created the 2 colours of the water.
History
This unique landscape has formed over thousands of years due to volcanic activity. Over the last 5000 years there have been around 17 eruptions. One eruption being so explosive that the top of the conical volcano blew and collapsed into a crater. The start point of the unique landscape we see today.
Sete Cidades also has historical importanceculturally , as the region was once a significant agricultural zone, contributing to the economy of São Miguel through the cultivation of tea, pineapples, and various other crops.
Natural Beauty of Sete Cidades
The Lakes: Blue and Green
The two main attractions of Sete Cidades are the Blue Lake (Lagoa Azul) and the Green Lake (Lagoa Verde). The colours are actually attributed to the unique mineral composition of the water and the surrounding vegetation.
The contrast between the azure and emerald hues creates a mesmerizing visual experience that captivates visitors. Numerous viewpoints around the crater offer stunning panoramic vistas, with the most popular being the Vista do Rei viewpoint, which provides a breathtaking perspective on both lakes.
Lake of Santiago
Sete Cidades is not just all about the main lakes. I took time out to walk to the Lake of Santiago. Up in the higher reaches of this area. Describing it as green beauty does not do it justice. Steep tree-lined slopes heading down into the deep green water.
A unique feast for the eyes!
Ferraria Thermal Hot Spring
Now then, just outside the rim of Sete Cidades is a special treat. Ferraria Thermal Hot Spring. So very unique in that it is where the hot thermal waters from beneath clash with the colder Atlantic Ocean.
The backdrop of the sea, set about volcanic rocks, waves lapping warm water over you as you swim….. Truly magical, I didn’t want to get out.
The water from beneath is coming up at over 60 degrees celsius. But the cold water of the ocean tempers that down to 28 degrees celsius. A magnificent warm outdoor and natural bathing area.
