As part of my Azores adventure I had island hopped across to Sao Jorge and it was time for adrenalin and fun.
I was loving the pace of life on the Azores, very slow. Small communities around every island with a very warm welcome.
One thing that has surprised me lots is that even though as part of Portugal and thus part of the Euro area, the costs are markedly low. Like when ordering a beer I can only smile when they charge me less than €1.50 each time .
But, to get a faster pace into your trip, a heart pumping adventure escape can be sought. Canyoning on Sao Jorge will go down as one of those experiences I shall never forget. Thrills all the way from the top of the island to the bottom.

For those looking for the thrill of canyoning in a magnificent and unique place then São Jorge in the Azores would be a big tip from me.
What is Canyoning?
Canyoning is an adventure sport that combines various activities within a natural canyon. Following a fast flowing stream or river down through the canyon, gorge or ravine.
Participants often find themselves hiking through rugged terrains, abseiling down waterfalls, sliding over smooth rock formations, and occasionally swimming through pools of water. The goal is to traverse the canyon from its source to its exit, often facing challenges along the way that require teamwork, skill, and a spirit of adventure.
This sport is not just about physical exertion; it’s also about immersing oneself in the beauty of nature. Adventurers are often treated to stunning views of waterfalls, lush vegetation, and unique geological formations.
Views, fun and an immersive experience that you could et normally on foot.

My Experience
We travelled up by jeep to the top of the island of Sao Jorge. The volcanic and towering Pico towering over the ocean behind me, green, canyons and gorges below leading to the ocean’s waters. I was doing this excursion with the great guides of Aventour.
The canyoning route we were doing was Ribeira do Salto do Prego. One of the most popular on the island. The first section involved a hike down to the canyon entrance. A superb start.

Then as the canyons get steeper, the water gushes down faster, it’s time to get into wetsuits, waterproof your kit in backpacks, get the harnesses on and literally head straight down, via the waterway, to the ocean, not via path but follow the canyon.
Clambering over rocks, striding through the water, looking around and up at the surroundings in awe. And that was just at the beginning and flattish parts. Plunging into crystal-clear waters from a rocky ledge or scaling a steep cliffside with nothing but the sounds of rushing water and chirping birds around you.
When you come to the first waterfall of rushing water the ropes come out and you abseil down. It felt massive, the adrenalin pumping hard. However before long you find out that the first one is tiny, but the appetite is whet and there is something extra special about roping down a gushing waterfall rather than a simple rock face.

Down and down you go. Where no walking path could ever take you. Right in the thick of paradise. Suddenly you turn a corner and the next drop reveals itself. Well rather disappears a long way down below you.
At some of the waterfall drops you can’t see the bottom until you start abseiling and then perhaps nervously look down. Crikey! Fun!

It is at these times that great guide can make you feel confident in the rope and to trust the surroundings, especially when they give off lots of experience, and a wonderful humour. That is just what I got with Luis of Aventour.

Eventually the canyon end with a last waterfall down to the edge of the ocean where the water runs into the sea. An amazing, adrenalin pumping experience.
However, the fun didn’t stop there. After a remote way down a canyon like that don’t expect a road or boat waiting for you so that you can get back up the island. The next mode of transport was to be a Quad bike.
