Edinburgh is a city made for walking. Whether you’re marching up the Royal Mile, scaling Arthur’s Seat, or just losing yourself in the historic closes of the Old Town, you are going to put some serious miles on your shoes or boots.
And if there’s one thing guaranteed after a day of exploring the Scottish capital, it’s that you’ll work up a formidable appetite.
When you need a meal that truly hits the spot, you need something hearty, comforting, and packed with local flavour.
On our latest trip, that place was The Mussel and Steak Bar. Situated right in the bustling heart of the city, it proved to be the perfect spot to rest our legs and refuel.

Location: Right in the Heart of the Old Town
You’ll find the restaurant at 110 West Bow, right where the famously colourful curve of Victoria Street sweeps down into the historic Grassmarket.
It’s an absolutely brilliant location, especially if you’ve spent the day wandering around the Castle or exploring the cobbled streets.

The whole area is steeped in history and has a fantastic buzz about it. Whether you are sitting inside enjoying the warm interior or catching some sun on their outdoor terrace, it is a prime spot to soak in the atmosphere of the city.
Atmosphere and First Impressions
Walking through the doors from the cobbled streets, we were immediately struck by the welcoming vibe.
The decor strikes a great balance—it has the vibrant, lively buzz you want from a popular city eatery, but it still feels comfortable and relaxed.
The staff were wonderfully attentive from the moment we crossed the threshold, getting us seated and settled in record time.

To kick things off, we were treated to a fantastic little surprise: two absolutely delicious, fresh oysters. It was a brilliant, hospitable touch that set a very high bar for the rest of the afternoon.
Scottish Sourcing: From Loch to Plate
One of the things that really elevates The Mussel and Steak Bar is their commitment to local Scottish produce. You aren’t just getting a hearty meal; you are getting genuine quality.
Their mussels are rope-grown and sourced up in Shetland, while the oysters are farmed in Scottish sea-water lochs.
As for the meat, they use grass-fed Scotch beef sourced from farms across the Central Belt, which is then dry-aged for a minimum of 35 days.
It makes a huge difference to the flavour when you know the ingredients have been sourced from the waters and pastures right on the doorstep.

A Menu Built for Big Appetites
When it came time to order, we were genuinely spoiled for choice. Glancing around the dining room, it was obvious that the kitchen was firing on all cylinders.
Every plate coming out looked sensational. As the name suggests, they specialize in the very best of Scottish land and sea—meaning you’ll see everything from perfectly cooked, thick-cut steaks to towering surf and turf combinations.
For our main event, we decided to dive straight into the seafood:
The Seafood Platter:
I decided to go all-in with this one. It was a magnificent, fresh spread that completely hit the mark.

When you are in Scotland, you want top-tier seafood, and this platter delivered an incredibly fresh, flavourful variety that satisfied every craving.
The Seafood Linguine:
Jen opted for the pasta, and it was a masterclass in rich, coastal flavours. The linguine was perfectly cooked and generously packed with seafood, making every bite count.

The Verdict: Bring Your Appetite
The food here isn’t just delicious; the portions are absolutely massive. The Mussel and Steak Bar certainly doesn’t skimp on the servings, providing exactly the kind of hearty, restorative food you need after a long day out in the Scottish elements.
If you find yourself in Edinburgh and are looking for an independent spot that delivers fantastic service, top-quality ingredients, and a great atmosphere, this needs to be on your itinerary.
The BaldHiker Top Tip: Make sure you go on an empty stomach! You are going to want plenty of room to enjoy every last bite. I’d also highly recommend booking ahead, as a place this good naturally draws a crowd.
