A Venice sunset on the Island of Giudecca

In the last post I explained arriving, comfort and beauty in Venice and the island of Giudecca. Peaceful was a word I used a lot. I also said I would show you how the evening fared as we sat out the front of the hostel with what started as a great cappuccino then progressed into happy hour and a cold beer.. or two. The view over the water to the main island of Venice was getting less busy we could see as the sun began its daily downward turn. Blues and whites turning to a glowing purple and pink.

‘Now this spot was getting better and better’ I thought. Along the water’s edge either way a handful of people had come out their front doors to think their thoughts in silence as the sun went down. What a great spot to live and be able to do often eh?

Those of you that know this site will be aware I have enjoyed sitting in many a spot to reflect with a sunset. From mountaintops, beaches, cliff-tops and boats in the pacific, this one however felt so much different yet again. Venice is unique. A kind of place all unto itself. The buildings, all seemingly crammed in, yet lined up spaced out on the horizon making for a wonderful backdrop.

After all the running around Europe so far, every minute of which has been a great happy adventure, it was nice to have those minutes, in silence, just a breeze, water crashing the kerbside, and the darkness falling on Venice.

  4. I went to Venice 10 years ago, arriving probably on the hottest night that summer, without a hotel or hostel reservation. After asking everywhere and finding out the whole place was booked, we just setup camp at one of the vaporetto stations and slept on the street.

It was a cool experience, but I didn’t not like being eaten alive by mosquitoes. However, the sunrise view was fantastic.

    Thanks for sharing this!

  5. I love Venice! It was on my bucket list of places I thought I ought to visit, but I was blown away by it. I travelled with my husband and family of 4 grown up children and we had the most wonderful time, in fact the apartment we stayed in is somewhere on your photos. We were lucky enough to rent an apartment with a large terrace overlooking Guidecca and spent wonderful leisurely mornings there watching the busy-ness along the canal. Bliss!
