From Berlin, it was time to head south some more, all the way down to Italy actually and to the water paradise of Venice and Generator Hostel Venice. Many people do not associate hostels with a place like this but I can tell you that this wonderful peaceful hideaway, not costing a fortune, sits on the beautiful and quiet island of Giudecca, out in the Venetian Lagoon. Across the water you see the main Venice island and San Marco, literally only a couple of minutes water bus away. By the hostel here on Giudecca you get the views, scenery, culture, peace and quiet with a water hop to explore anywhere. Why just look at one of the views from the room! ….
Just getting there from the airport is a joy.. none of the usual roads, busy metros etc.. it is straight out the airport, a couple hundred metres walk to the boats that await. If you have money to burn you can go fast in one of the water taxis. However, with the hostel situated out on the far island it is a great tip to take the water bus. Yes it is just over a hour and half to the stop you need but crikey it is the best and different kind of bus with views you will get on for a while. Taking you through places allowing you to see quite a lot of the lagoon en route. A Beautiful Bargain!
And then from the paradise outside.. you step inside the 19th century building.
Hard to remember you are in a hostel I can assure you. The great design theme of Generator Hostel is here. Quirky, fresh modern design using young and old fittings but absolutely never overdone. First stop of course… a cappuccino, rest the bags in the room and sit watching the calm watery views from the front. A very romantic setting.
Happy hour was upon us once again.. yes quite a theme in the hostels isn’t it? Well, here it was a pizza (in Italy after all) and a large beer all for just €9. I came to love this spot at this hostel and the next couple of posts to come will show why. Views, discoveries, and local street scenes. For tonight I will leave you in the comfort within. Venice is not all about exclusivity, posh, rich and busy packed narrow streets. This new Generator Hostel is a perfect getaway for groups, couples and a whole new kind of escapism. The atmosphere was perfectly relaxing and calm yet you can go get a bustling atmosphere without much travel whenever you wish. If you love people watching too what better place to sit and watch all go by.
Even though we were on a flying visit around all the hostels, this was a place I could have truly relaxed yet explored from.. for days and days. Sun, water, great people, great food and absolutely great coffee. What more do you want? 😀
