The Azores – A Sao Jorge Adventure from Top to Bottom

The Azores – A Sao Jorge Adventure from Top to Bottom

It was time for adventure, it was time for adrenalin and fun. I had hopped across to another gorgeous Azores island, Sao Jorge. Yes the pace of life here is very slow. Small communities around every island with a very warm welcome. In fact one thing that has surprised me lots is that even though as part of Portugal and thus part of the Euro area, the costs are markedly low. Like when ordering a beer I can only smile when they charge me less than € 1.50 each time icon smile The Azores A Sao Jorge Adventure from Top to Bottom

But a heart pumping adventure escape can be sought… and you won’t be disappointed. Canyoning on Sao Jorge will go down as one of those experiences I shall never forget. Thrills a minute.

By jeep up to the top of the middle of this paradise isle. Pico towering over the ocean behind you, green green valleys, canyons and gorges below leading to the waters. Time to hike down first. Superb. Then as the canyons get steeper, the water gushes down faster, it’s time to get into wetsuits, waterproof your kit in backpacks, get the harnesses on and literally head down to the ocean, not via path but follow the canyon.

Clambering over rocks, striding through the water, looking around and up in awe, that’s just the flattish parts, when you come to the first waterfall of rushing water the ropes come out and abseil down. Later you find out that the first one is tiny, but the appetite is wet and there is something extra special roping down a gushing waterfall rather than a simple rocky face.

Down and down you go. Where no walking path could ever take you. Right in the thick of paradise. Suddenly you turn a corner and the next drop reveals itself. Well rather disappears a long way down. Some you can’t see the bottom until you start abseiling and then perhaps nervously look down….. crikey.. Fun!

A great guide that makes you feel confident in the rope and surroundings, with super experience, and a wonderful humour. Just what I got with Luis from Aventour, Sao Jorge. Great adrenalin pumping, exciting time.

At the bottom, all rivers and canyons lead to the ocean.. What a way to finish!

Of course as an outdoor lover I could never miss the views on the way in and out of the canyon…. Even the cows get a tip top view.

If you thought the fun ends there.. think again.. After a remote way down a canyon like that don’t expect a road waiting for you, the mode of transport round here? Quad bike.

My favourite island – the island of cheese and Fajas and now canyoning. Lucky you!
