Is This Walk For Me?

This list will help you decide if the Helvellyn Sunrise Guided Walk is the perfect adventure for you.

  • You want to experience the unforgettable magic of watching the dawn break over the Lake District from the summit of one of Britain’s favourite mountains.
  • You are excited by the idea of a unique adventure, hiking safely at night under the stars with an expert guide to lead the way.

  • You have a reasonable level of fitness and are comfortable walking up to 7 miles on steep and sometimes rocky mountain paths.
  • You want to capture incredible photos of the sun rising over the fells, with stunning views of Striding Edge below.
  • You enjoy walking with a small, friendly, and social group at a pace that isn’t rushed, ensuring everyone enjoys the journey together.

What to Expect on the Day

Depending on the time of year, sunrise time, the meeting time will vary. Middle of Summer being a really early near midnight start and winter being a late, approx 4 am start. Exact timings will be given well beforehand.

The Route:

Never fear, there is more than one way up Helvellyn and this one avoids Striding Edge in the dark skies.

We shall start the walk in the early hours of the morning, over on the Thirlmere side of the mountain. This allows us to take our time, walking up under the stars as the top draws near.

Once at the top the pre dawn light will already be upon us and hopefully (weather dependent) the sun will rise in front of us, between both the famous edges and above Red Tarn.

After everyone has all the photos and experience they need we will head down with smiles. The descent is full of wonder too as you get views all the way over the Lake District and see what you climbed the night just gone.

You will have climbed a mountain and back down well before lunchtime.

What’s Included:

An overnight and morning of guiding by an experienced mountain guide. From beginning to end your safety, happiness and sense of fulfilment is paramount to us.

What to Bring:

Prior to the day we will email with all the details and weather forecasts. Here is a list of what to bring as a minimum.

What Our Hikers Say

  • I would definitely recommend the BaldHiker

I have enjoyed a number of hikes with the BaldHiker and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Paul engages with participants throughout, and I have come away from each hike, not only with a sense of achievement but having made new friends.

  • Lovely group of people which made the day

This was my first hike/walk with the BaldHiker group. Fantastic guides, knowledgeable about the area we were walking and the route. Lovely group of people which made the day even better, I’m planning my next outing with the group soon!
