We have found a place that is definitely ‘us’ and that is Camp Plas, near Welshpool, Wales. A place where you can escape to nature along the banks of the River Vyrnwy and choose to glamp or camp in the beautiful meadows.
Off grid, amongst nature, full of bespoke and unique wonders it is a place you will fall in love with.
Camp Plas is packed with escapism and rustic charm. The dedication that has been put into it can really be felt as you spend time there. There is such an array of accommodation choices too with unique spots that certainly help to create unique and special memories for all who get to know this place.
Location
Camp Plas is located just less than a mile away from the village of Donalog near Welshpool. It feels far away from the hustle and bustle of life outside yet very accessible. Even driving there for arrival you feel away from it all as you travel along the country roads in the green valleys surrounded by the mid Wales hills.
It is situated in the gem that is the Vyrnwy Valley with the picturesque River Vyrnwy flowing right beside the meadows. Perfect for walking, swimming, relaxing and escaping.
Accommodation
There is an accommodation for every type of traveller at Camp Plas. With each one very carefully crafted so that you can immerse yourself within the natural landscape and have your own special kind of peace.
Wild Meadow Camping
Let’s start with the camping in the meadows. I love the way that this is done. You have a beautiful, colourful wild flower meadow by the riverside. You camp within it but each pitch seems discreetly cut out to maximise the nature and meadow and each pitch is a really good distance away from the next. There is space for those bringing their own tents and campervans.
The visitor and nature really does come before the packing in of tent pitches.
Within the meadow you may also want to glamp in one of the 3 lovely Field Bell Tents if you have not got your own tent. Each one is spacious, kitted out with a big double bed as well as singles and outside your own firepit space to sit and relax amongst the wild flowers.
Cudffan Bach Luxury Bell Tent
Cudffan Bach translates to ‘Little Hideaway’ and this is most definitely true of this gem of a glamping spot. Out of the fields, up some steps and you are transported into the hideaway in the trees.
Truly an esacpe this luxury bell tent and location has all the ingredients of an escape whether travelling solo, with a friend or partner, or as a family.
You can sit by the fireside, or lie in the hammock, looking out over the farm and valley through the trees. It comes with its own outdoor cooking area with hob, fridge and spring water. Plus its own discreet waterless toilet facilities.
Inside the bell tent you will find a huge amount of space with a comfortable double bed and 2 sofas that turn into single beds.
The Boatshed
How about this for a unique place to stay and unwind, The Boatshed. A rustic and romantic hideaway with a private view over the river.
It certainly has a real charm and character which is not just contained to the building itself but the surroundings. It is a very popular place to stay and I can tell why.
Inside you have a glorious double bed that looks out through the balcony windows and privately over the river where you can easily step down to your own little bit of riverside. There is a sofa bed for use too if you want more numbers with you.
The quaint kitchen area has all you need with hob and grill etc but outdoors you will find a unique bath/shower so you can bathe under the stars.
Facilities
We are again treated to natural and rustic charm when coming to the facilities. There is a lovely communal area that has all you need to cook, make a brew and to sit, eat and relax.
Everything is hand made and unique together with the shower and toilet area that uses rain showers and heated washrooms etc.
The water here comes from its own natural spring.
If you want more space to relax under a roof then there is the wondrous larger space of The Barn. You can use this for activities or for groups to wind down and chat.
For another special place to excape to and unwind you could make your way up through the trees to ‘The Parachute’. A fabulous area under a canopy within the trees. Sit around the forepit and tell stories to friends and family.
Wild Swimming
The natural joy of Camp Plas is not just contained within accommodation and the farm. You have your very own magical wild swimming spot right there beside the meadow.
Stepping out from your tent you walk the very short distance through the wild flowers and can gradually get in for a dip in the river.
It is a perfect spot for a swim, the river and backdrop is picturesque, the water is so clear and you can choose to follow the shallower waters or go deeper for a proper swim as you desire.
There was no excuse not to go for a swim before and after the day’s adventures. Of course the dogs loved it too with us joining in the water fun.
Of course, outdoor activities are not confined to the water as you have an endless supply of walks in the area. In fact Camp Plas sits right on Glyndŵr’s Way.
The Hosts
A special mention should be given to the amazing hosts and creators of Camp Plas, Charlotte and Barney. The warmth, enthusiasm and passion for this unique hideaway that they have created is apparent as soon as you arrive and all the way through your time here.
As well as being busy tending to the land and livestock they have a real passion about keeping the site a magical, natural oasis for visitors.
The way they have avoided mod cons to keep all as close to nature yet comfortable for guests is beyond wonderful. The peaceful and nostalgic atmosphere they have created, away from the modern world is something you should experience.
Conclusion
If you want to escape, reconnect with nature or to completely wind down I can highly recommend you look to get to Camp Plas.
No matter if you are a walker, swimmer, adventurer, nature lover or want to just sit back, breathe and relax. Then put Camp Plas on your radar.
