Wensleydale, in the Yorkshire Dales, is absolutely one of my favourite valleys. Not only does it provide stunning scenery and walks but there is an endless amount of things to see and do.
Those that know me will know that I also have a big family history in the valley in nearby villages of Gayle and Hardraw. It is always a joy to travel back here and with Malc the Border Collie too for a dog friendly stay at the Blue Lion Inn, East Witton.

The Blue Lion Inn, located in the picturesque village of East Witton, is a charming pub that offers a delightful escape for both locals and visitors alike.
Renowned for its warm hospitality, hearty food, and inviting atmosphere, this establishment has become a notable destination in North Yorkshire.
Let’s have a look at my experience, explore the various aspects of the Blue Lion Inn, from its ambience and menu to its service and value for money, providing you with a comprehensive review that can help in planning your visit.
The Blue Lion Inn is more than just a place to grab a bite; it’s a social hub where people gather to enjoy good food and great company.
With a history that dates back over 180 years, the inn reflects traditional Yorkshire hospitality while incorporating modern comforts. Its rustic charm is palpable the moment you step through the door, with wooden beams and a cozy fireplace that beckon you to relax and unwind.

Location and Accessibility
Situated in East Witton, the Blue Lion Inn is easily accessible from major roads, making it a convenient stop for travelers exploring the Yorkshire Dales.
I took a drone pic from above and you see the large village green of East Witton surrounded by the village and then the valley of Wensleydale wonderfully. It is like stepping back in time.

The surrounding countryside is stunning, offering scenic views that enhance the dining experience. Notably, the inn is well-connected to many nearby attractions such as Jervaulx Abbey and the picturesque village of Middleham. More on that later.
Ample parking is available on-site, ensuring that guests can arrive without any hassle.
Ambience and Decor
Upon entering the Blue Lion Inn, you are greeted by an inviting interior that beautifully blends traditional and contemporary elements.
The decor is traditional, with oak furnishings and wonderful inglenook fireplaces, while the refurbished courtyard bedrooms and redecorated main restaurant give it a modern, luxurious feel.

The layout is designed to provide a variety of seating options, from intimate tables for two to larger areas suitable for family gatherings and celebrations. The decor features local artwork, charming knick-knacks, and a warm color palette that creates a cozy yet vibrant atmosphere.
For those who prefer al fresco dining, or a drink on a warm day, the Blue Lion Inn offers a lovely outdoor seating area. With views of the picturesque Yorkshire countryside and the village, this space is perfect for enjoying a meal in the fresh air during warmer months.
History
The Blue Lion Inn was originally built as a shooting lodge and around 1840 it evolved into an inn. The big landowners of olden times around here were the Earls of Ailesbury. Part of their coat of arms was a blue lion so was used to name the inn.

For the first 100 or so years of the inn it was run by successive people from the same family. The last one being a locally infamous Bessie Fletcher. She served beer straight from the barrell with a jug and never opened the inn on Sunday. One reason the Blue Lion was the last pub in England to have a 6 day licence.
She was also known to only serve anyone that she liked the look of.
Paul & Helen Klein did an amazing job when they took over in 1990, rescuing it from disrepair and ruin. In fact they were the first to put an actual bar in the place.
I really did get that sense of being in an old inn with lots of character, yet you are never without any modern necessities or comfort when staying there.
The Room
I was looking forward to seeing the room for sure. It was extremely spacious and beautiful to be honest. Yes, beautiful and a warm homely feeling.

A really comfortable bed together with a view across the village to the hills. Loved it!
Malc the dog, had some surprises awaiting him in the room too bless him. A real dog friendly welcome with some delicious luxurious food wrapped in a gift box.

Dining
The big had heard previously of the Blue Lion Inn was in a large part because of the reputation of the food. I really was looking forward to dining time.
My appetite was well and truly whet just looking at some of the menu!

Jeesh! Choices, lovely choices. I could see why the place had such a good reputation as well. Not just with the food.
The evenings are getting cooler and the log fire in the dining room was flickering, keeping us warm and cosy together with the candles and lighting. The whole eating experience had a wonderful feel to it.
So, where to start? Well I was in Wensleydale, home of the famous cheese! So I was immedietly drawn to… Twice baked Wensleydale cheese soufflé, with chive cream sauce. Amazing!

I can only think how difficult that must be to prepare so well as it was! It was delicious.
Or what about another starter….. Butter confit hand-dived king orkney scallop, with pickled cucumber, scallop velouté, sea greens and caviar.

As you can gather from the board I previously showed you. the mains are plentiful, all sounding lovely and a choice there for all tastes. The two we sampled were:
Roast Crown of Yorkshire Partridge, confit leg and walnut roll, roast pear, celeriac and red wine sauce…

and, Ox cheek and riggwelter suet pudding, with a maple glazed parsnip, colcannon potato and parsnip crisps.

Oh… my… word. Every meal, every course was stunning and delicious, and filling! It really was. I made a mental note to head back this way again and again to work my way down the menu.
Absolute compliments must go to the kitchen staff!
The Bar
After a lovely meal, it was time to head into the bar area, sit by that glorious fire and enjoy a lovely evening drink of course.

An ale followed by a gin, or two was in order to end another wonderful day of travel in the area.
Malc made himself cosy by the fire too!

Exploring Nearby
Of course, after a comfortable sleep there was a whole wealth of things to see and explore. We are in Wensleydale after all.
Old favourites like Hardraw Force, or the little village of Gayle near Hawes that holds so many childhood memories for me. Plus I found new special places. Literally round the corner you can take the little stroll to Cauldron Falls.
If you wanted a great drive from here then just beyond Hawes you can take the great road, Buttertubs Pass, down into Swaledale with Keld and Muker. Or wild swim at Wain Wath.

Conclusion
Honestly, The Blue Lion Inn was a gem of a place to stay and together with the location I can only highly recommend it. Also if you are looking for a pet friendly place that truly welcomes dogs then here is your place for the area.
The Inn delivers an exceptional dining experience that beautifully marries tradition with modern flair. From the warm and inviting atmosphere to the delicious menu offerings and attentive service, it’s easy to see why this establishment has garnered a loyal following.
