A Brief History of Lokrum

Ancient Roots and Stories

Lokrum has a lot more history than you think that dates back to ancient times. According to legend, the island was cursed by the last Benedictine monks who inhabited it. They were forced to leave the island so they left a curse claiming that no one would be able to settle there again.

Archaeological findings suggest that the island has been inhabited since the Roman era, with ancient ruins scattered throughout.

One of the legends of Lokrum is that Richard the Lionheart sheltered on it after a shipwreck coming back from The Crusades. It is said that Richard fell in love with the island and I can certainly see why. It feels like a little hidey-hole right in the middle of the Adriatic ocean – the perfect place to shelter from stormy seas.

The story goes that due to the curse of the monks, the locals convinced hm to build a church in Dubrovnik rather than on the island as he wanted.

The Role of the Benedictine Monks

During the 11th century, Benedictine monks established a monastery on Lokrum, which remains a significant part of the island’s history.

The name of the island ‘Lokrum’ comes from the time of the Benedictne Monks. It comes from a translation from the latin ‘acrumen’ which means ‘sour fruit’. The monks were known for their cultivation of exotic fruits.

The monastery served as a spiritual retreat and a place for agriculture. The monks cultivated various plants, many of which are still visible in the island’s botanical gardens today. The presence of these monks has greatly shaped Lokrum’s identity.

More History

The castle atop the island, Fort Royal was started by Napolean to help protect and consolodate is Empire in the area.

In 1859 Archduke Maximilian Ferdinand of Habsburg had a huge holiday mansion and gardens built on the island. Even more exotic plants were grown here.

Modern Significance

Today, Lokrum is a protected nature reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It attracts visitors from all over the world who come to appreciate its beauty and tranquility. The island is also a popular location for filming, including the hit series Game of Thrones.

Things to Do on Lokrum

Exploring the Botanical Gardens

One of Lokrum’s standout features is its stunning botanical gardens, home to a variety of exotic plants and trees from all over the world and Australia and South America in particular. The gardens were started in 1959.

It takes what the monks started and the Austrians did to a new level.

Visiting the Ruins of the Benedictine Monastery

No visit to Lokrum is complete without exploring the ruins of the once-thriving Benedictine monastery. The remains of the church and cloister provide a glimpse into the past, while the surrounding area offers a serene atmosphere for reflection. Informational plaques detail the history of the site, making it an educational experience as well.

Dead Sea Lake

The island boasts several idyllic swimming spots. One of the most popular is the rocky beach, where visitors can take a refreshing dip in crystal-clear waters.

But, for a more secluded and unique experience, head to the Dead Sea (Mrtvo More), a lagoon-esque salt water lake that is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and unwinding while surrounded by nature.

Mtrvo More is gloriously clean, green and surrounded by high rock walls, leafy foliage and a big flat pancake of rock that’s perfect for sunbathing. It’s so tranquil and tropical that, when you’re there, you literally could be anywhere.

This peace was somewhat disturbed when, as we were floating on the surface of the water, divers suddenly emerged beneath us, having swum into the lake through an ominously dark cave that leads to the ocean. The water is deep by the cave and, be warned, a tantilising rope swing looks easier to climb than it is.

Hiking Trails and Scenic Views

Hiking enthusiasts will appreciate the network of trails that traverse the island. The paths lead to stunning viewpoints, allowing guests to take in breathtaking vistas of Dubrovnik and the surrounding sea. Be sure to trek to the Fort Royal, a historic fortress built by Napolean that offers panoramic views and a great photo opportunity.

Peacocks

Lokrum is not just a feast for the eyes; it is also home to diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for the many peacocks wandering freely and various bird species that inhabit the area. Imported from the Canary Islands.

Tips for Your Visit

Best Time of Year to Visit

The optimal time to visit Lokrum is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the crowds are thinner, allowing for a more enjoyable experience. Summer can be hot, but it is also the peak time for ferries and tourists, so plan accordingly.

Dining Options on Lokrum

While there are limited dining options on the island, there is a charming café located near the monastery that serves light meals and refreshments.

I’d recommend that you have lunch in the Pizzaria, which is based in the ruins of an old mansion. It is one of only two places to eat on the island, but doesn’t exploit that luxury with poor food; the pizzas are delicious, thin-based with generous toppings and oodles of cheese.

For a more extensive selection, you may want to dine in Dubrovnik before or after your visit. However, bringing a picnic can be a delightful way to enjoy the time on Lokrum.

Conclusion

As you plan your trip to Dubrovnik, make sure to include Lokrum in your itinerary. Embrace the opportunity to disconnect from the busy world and immerse yourself in the natural beauty and historical richness of this hidden gem.
