Don’t know about you, but I’ve always found that the best places to stay are those that don’t just offer a bed, but tell a story.
If you’ve been following my recent wanderings through Amesbury—Britain’s oldest town—you’ll know it’s a place where 10,000 years of history are tucked into every corner.
And right at the heart of that story sits a Georgian gem that has recently found a fresh lease of life.
I’m talking about Fairlawn House. Now the debut property from the local, family-owned brand “A Little Place,” this Grade II listed townhouse has been reimagined as a cosy boutique hotel that perfectly bridges the gap between Amesbury’s elegant past and its vibrant present.

The BaldHiker Lowdown
A Portal Into Amesbury’s Past
One of the reasons I love Fairlawn is its sheer architectural personality. Built in 1837 for a local surgeon, it arrived during a time when the English country house was coming into its own.
But this house hasn’t just sat still; it’s been a bit of a local “chameleon” over the last two centuries.
Throughout its near 200-year history, Fairlawn has served as a doctor’s surgery, an auction house, and even an esteemed ladies’ finishing school.

You can almost feel those layers of history as you walk through the doors.
The Georgian architecture is a photographer’s dream—think classic symmetry, elegant brickwork, and large sash windows that catch the Wiltshire light.
Boutique Comfort: From Regency Flair to Loft Character
The “A Little Place” branding has brought a really thoughtful, calm vibe to the 14 en-suite rooms. Each one feels unique, but there are a couple of standouts for me.

If you’re a fan of a bit of drama (the good kind!), the Regency-inspired signature rooms are fantastic.
They’ve got a real Jane Austen or Bridgerton feel to them—light, spacious, and perfect for planning your next Wiltshire adventure over a coffee.
On the other hand, for those who like a bit of quirky character, the Townhouse Loft is tucked away in the eaves of the top floor.

It’s been recently renovated to highlight the original pitched ceilings and wooden beams.

Breakfast in the Wine Cellar
One of my favourite “quirky” features of the house is where you head for your morning refuel.
The former wine cellar has been transformed into a unique feature snug and co-working space. It’s a subterranean sanctuary where you can enjoy your breakfast surrounded by the original stonework of the house.

Again, as with many 19th-century cellars, it’s a “mind your head” situation as you navigate the stairs, but it’s absolutely worth it for the atmosphere.

Your Gateway to 10,000 Years of History
Fairlawn House doesn’t just sit in Amesbury; it anchors it. It’s the perfect spoke in the wheel of your Wiltshire journey.
From here, you’re just a two-mile stroll from the mysteries of Stonehenge and a short walk from the fantastic new Amesbury History Centre, where you can see the 10,000-year-old finds from Blick Mead.
After a day of exploring the River Avon along Lord’s Walk, you can wander back into town for a hearty meal at The New Inn before retreating to the Georgian elegance of Fairlawn for the night.
For day excursions beyond the packed town history I can say that Amesbury makes for a perfect base for a holiday of discovery and history.
All within short drives you have:
Old Sarum, the splendid ruins on the hill that has a massive history to be explored.
Salisbury Cathedral which is a masterpiece of medieval architecture and has Britain’s tallest spire.
Only half an our away to the west is a treat for the whole family, Longleat Safari Park. For more wildlife learning you can go down the road to visit Winchester’s Marwell Zoo or over to Andover and the Hawk Conservatory Trust.
Even within an hour of Fairlawn House you can be exploring history and sights in Bath or the medieval village of Lacock.
Bespoke Dining for Special Celebrations
One of the most unique aspects of the “A Little Place” reimagining is how they handle food. This isn’t a standard walk-in restaurant; instead, Fairlawn House specializes in exclusive, intimate celebrations for groups ranging from 10 to 30 guests.
It’s the perfect setup for a landmark birthday, a luxury hen party, or even a relaxed corporate retreat where you want the place to yourselves.

The chefs craft superb “authentically local” menus that highlight high-quality ingredients from the surrounding Wiltshire landscape.
What’s really refreshing is the atmosphere—whether you want a “warm, joyful” vibe with twinkling lights for a family reunion or a “relaxed, elegant space” for a business dinner, the team tailors the environment to you.
Oh, and here’s a quirky tip for your group: you’re invited to bring your own favourite bottles to accompany the meal, ensuring you have the perfect pairing for your celebration.

Paul’s Practical Tips
- Book Direct: If you book directly with “A Little Place” and stay for three nights or more, they often throw in a couple of free drinks from the Honesty Bar.
- Accessibility: Being a Georgian property, access is limited. There are three steps up to the front door, though ground-floor rooms are available in “The Nook” section.
- Groups: If you’re planning a big family takeover, the house can accommodate up to 30 guests, making it a great hub for a history-loving clan.

Staying at Fairlawn House isn’t just about having a destination; it’s about becoming part of the long, storied tapestry of Amesbury. It’s the perfect base to discover why this town is truly where British history began.
Paul’s Verdict: A beautifully considered base for exploring Britain’s oldest town. The “A Little Place” team have turned a historic building into a genuinely warm and stylish home-from-home.
