Hadrian’s Wall & Roman Forts Guided Walk: The Ultimate Heritage Loop
At A Glance
Step back 2,000 years and walk in the footsteps of the Roman legions on this comprehensive guided loop. Starting from the award-winning The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre, we embark on a journey that traverses the most spectacular and well-preserved sections of Hadrian’s Wall.
Led by Paul Steele, an expert in mountaineering and adventure travel, you won’t just follow a path; you’ll uncover the strategic genius of the Roman Empire.
We’ll snake along the rugged crags of the Whin Sill, visit the iconic site of Sycamore Gap, and explore the sprawling ruins of Housesteads Roman Fort. This is a day where ancient history is carved into the very landscape we walk upon.
Is This Walk For Me?
This loop is designed for those who want a deep dive into Britain’s Roman past without the logistical faff of buses and car transfers.
- You want to see the “Big Three” of the central section: The Wall, Housesteads, and Vindolanda in one seamless trip.
- You enjoy a physical challenge—the path along the Wall is famously undulating, with short, sharp climbs and descents that will get your heart rate up.
- You are interested in the stories behind the stones, from the lives of the soldiers on the Roman Military Way to the civilians who lived along the Stanegate Road.
- You want to explore Roman Vindolanda, a haven for archaeology where the famous writing tablets were discovered.
- You prefer a small group dynamic where you can ask questions and take your time at the viewpoints.
What to Expect on the Day
The High Road: We begin with a climb onto the dramatic escarpment of Steel Rigg. Following the Wall eastward, we’ll pass Milecastle 39 and the iconic site of Sycamore Gap. The views here over Crag Lough are arguably the most photographed in the North of England.
The Fortified Frontier: We reach Housesteads Roman Fort, the most complete auxiliary fort in Britain. We’ll take time to inspect the remains from the ridge and discuss how 800 soldiers lived and worked on this exposed cliff edge.
The Ancient Highway: Leaving the Wall, we head south to follow sections of the Roman Military Way and the Stanegate, the original frontier road that predates the Wall itself. We’ll pass the unique heather-thatched Causeway House and the historic Crindledykes Limekiln.
The Archaeological Jewel: We visit the entrance of Roman Vindolanda, where the landscape opens up into a massive archaeological site still being excavated today.
The Modern Discovery: We conclude our loop back at The Sill, where you can browse the “Sycamore Gap: Coming Home” exhibition and enjoy a well-earned coffee and local cake in the café.
