Catbells Guided Walk: A Lake District Classic
At A Glance
Join us for an unforgettable guided ascent of Catbells, one of the most beloved and iconic fells in the English Lake District.
Standing at a modest 451 metres (1,480 feet), Catbells offers a “pocket Lake District” experience—providing panoramic 360-degree views that rival those of the highest peaks in the park.
Led by Paul, an experienced guide with a deep knowledge of the Lakeland fells, we’ll start our adventure in the town of Keswick to make it a fuller day with lots of variety and ease of parking.
By joining a guided group, you can leave the stress of parking and navigation behind and focus entirely on the staggering beauty of Skiddaw, Blencathra, and the Newlands Valley.
Is This Walk For Me?
This list will help you decide if the Catbells Guided Walk is the right adventure for you:
- You want to conquer your first “proper” Lake District fell with the safety and confidence of an expert guide.
- You’re looking for big rewards—Catbells offers some of the best views in the UK for relatively modest effort.
- You are comfortable with a steep and short initial climb and short sections of easy, non-technical scrambling near the summit.
- You enjoy the social aspect of walking in a small, friendly group of like-minded outdoor enthusiasts.
- You want to discover the local stories of the fell, from its mining history to its literary connection with Beatrix Potter.
What to Expect on the Day
The Scenic Start: We meet in Keswick to add more miles and adventure to the day and avoids the notorious parking difficulties at the foot of the fell.
The Ascent: From the foot of the fell, we’ll follow the well-maintained ridge path. The climb involves a series of “bumps” and mini-peaks, meaning the views are constantly opening up behind us over Keswick and Borrowdale.
The Summit: Standing on the summit trig point is a moment to savour. We’ll take plenty of time for photos and a well-earned break to absorb the views of the Western Fells and the deep green of the Newlands Valley below.
Your Safety: From the town to the final descent, your safety and enjoyment are our priorities. We move at a relaxed, sociable pace, ensuring everyone feels comfortable and inspired by the landscape.
What to Bring
To ensure you have a safe and happy day on the fell, please bring the following as a minimum:
- Walking boots: With good grip and ankle support (essential for the rocky sections).
- Waterproofs: A breathable jacket and trousers (Lakeland weather can change fast!).
- Layers: A moisture-wicking base layer and a warm fleece mid-layer.
- Snacks & Water: Enough to keep your energy up for a 3-hour hill walk.
- Small backpack: To carry your gear comfortably.
