Step into the lush landscapes that helped inspire one of the greatest fantasy worlds ever created.

Beginning in the charming village of Hurst Green, this beautiful 6.5-mile loop takes us through the Ribble Valley, past the historic Stonyhurst College, and along the very paths J.R.R. Tolkien walked while working on The Lord of the Rings.

With its ancient woodlands and winding rivers, you’ll easily see how this area inspired the Shire!

This is a fantastic, gently paced walk that is perfect if you want to soak in the scenery without the strain of a heavy mountain climb.

I’ll handle all the navigation and pacing, so you can switch off your worry brain, chat with new friends, and just enjoy the journey.

Malc and Pete absolutely love the stretches along the River Hodder for a cooling splash, so well-behaved dogs are more than welcome to join the adventure.

We’ll finish up back in the village where we can grab a well-earned drink at the Shireburn Arms!

Is this trail for me?

Fitness: This is a gentle, rolling 6.5-mile route without any major hill climbs, making it a fantastic choice for most fitness levels. If you can comfortably stay on your feet for a few hours with plenty of breaks, you will be absolutely fine.

Terrain: We will be walking on well-trodden woodland trails, grassy farm tracks, and riverside paths. It can get a bit muddy in places along the River Ribble after heavy rain, so a good pair of walking boots is essential. Expect a few stiles and kissing gates along the route.

The Vibe: Very relaxed and social. We walk at the pace of the slowest person, stop frequently for photos, and never leave anyone behind. Over half of our walkers join by themselves, so if you are flying solo, it’s a completely welcoming, stress-free way to meet like-minded people.

Dogs: Absolutely! Your four-legged friends are more than welcome. There are plenty of great spots for them to paddle, and Malc and Pete will be there to show them the ropes.

  • I would definitely recommend the BaldHiker

I have enjoyed a number of hikes with the BaldHiker and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. Paul engages with participants throughout, and I have come away from each hike, not only with a sense of achievement but having made new friends.

  • Lovely group of people which made the day

This was my first hike/walk with the BaldHiker group. Fantastic guides, knowledgeable about the area we were walking and the route. Lovely group of people which made the day even better, I’m planning my next outing with the group soon!

Ready for an Unforgettable Adventure?

Tolkien Trail | 25 October 2026 | £25 per person

No, not at all! For this specific trail, the terrain is gentle and rolling without any major mountain climbs.

As with all our adventures, we take the walk at a pace that is comfortable for the slowest person.

We are out to enjoy the beautiful Ribble Valley, not to win a race, so there will be plenty of stops to catch our breath and take photos.

Yes, absolutely! This is a very dog-friendly route with lots of grassy paths and spots for a splash in the River Hodder.

I love to bring my own dogs along, so Malc and Pete will likely be there to welcome your four-legged friends to the pack.

We walk in most weather—a bit of Lancashire rain has never stopped a great walk!

However, your safety and enjoyment are always my top priority. We will keep a close eye on the forecast, and if the conditions become unsafe, we will reschedule or offer an alternative. Just be sure to pack your waterproofs just in case!
