Rhiwargor Waterfall: A Spectacular Short Walk at Lake Vyrnwy

If you ever find yourself driving the incredibly scenic perimeter of Lake Vyrnwy, it is very easy to get so captivated by the vast waters and the iconic straining tower that you miss one of the area’s best hidden secrets.

Tucked away at the very northern tip of the lake is Rhiwargor Waterfall (known locally as Pistyll Rhyd-y-meinciau).

It is one of the highest waterfalls in Wales, boasting a spectacular 100-metre cascade down the heather-clad slopes of the Afon Eiddew valley.

Like Melincourt, and Henrhyd, this is one of those wonderfully rewarding spots where you don’t need to embark on a gruelling day-long trek to see something genuinely awe-inspiring. Here is why you need to make the stop.

The Walk Alongside the Afon Eiddew

The adventure begins at the Rhiwargor car park, which sits just off the B4393. From there, the trail is wonderfully straightforward.

You follow the course of the Afon Eiddew stream up the valley. The path is relatively flat and accessible, starting with a well-maintained gravel track before becoming a bit more uneven and rugged as you get closer to the falls.

It takes about 20 to 30 minutes each way, making it a perfect hour-long round trip if you take your time.

Along the way, you cross a lovely wooden footbridge, and the scenery opens up beautifully.

The further you walk, the more the valley wraps around you, building a real sense of scale before the main event finally comes into view.

It is worth noting that while the main path is easy-going, the surrounding fields and the final approach can get incredibly muddy and boggy.

You will absolutely want a sturdy pair of walking boots, especially if you plan on exploring the rocks at the base of the cascade.

Reaching the Cascades

Unlike single-drop waterfalls that plunge straight down, Rhiwargor is a spectacular series of cascades. The water tumbles and weaves its way down the rocky, stepped face of the valley.

When you reach the base, there are plenty of spots to sit on the boulders, enjoy a flask of tea, and just listen to the roar of the water.

If you are feeling adventurous (and sure-footed!), there are faint, muddy paths up the left-hand side that allow you to climb alongside the falls.

Exploring these upper tiers reveals some beautiful, secluded pools—though take great care, as the rocks are always slippery.

It’s a fantastic, family-friendly spot. Whether you want to skim stones in the shallow stream, paddle your feet on a hot summer day, or just capture some stunning photographs of the Welsh landscape at its most raw, Rhiwargor delivers in spades.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

If you are adding Rhiwargor to your Lake Vyrnwy itinerary, here are the essentials to keep in mind:

  • Getting There: Head to the northern end of Lake Vyrnwy. Use the postcode SY10 0NE, which will get you onto the B4393.
  • Parking: The Rhiwargor Waterfall car park is completely free (unlike the main dam car parks, which are pay-and-display). Space can be limited on busy summer weekends, so arriving early is always a good idea.
  • Facilities: There are no toilets or cafes directly at the falls. However, during the warmer months, you can sometimes find a mobile coffee van parked up in the car park. Otherwise, the Lake Vyrnwy visitor hub is just a short drive away.
  • When to Visit: It’s open year-round. While it’s a brilliant spot for a summer picnic, the waterfall is at its most thunderous and impressive after a spell of heavy Welsh rain.

If you are exploring Mid Wales, taking the time to drive to the far end of the lake and stretch your legs up this valley is an absolute must. It’s quiet, dramatic, and the perfect slice of untamed Welsh beauty.

If Rhiwargor gives you the waterfall bug, you are in luck. Just a 40-minute scenic drive away is one of the Seven Wonders of Wales. Check out my guide to visiting the mighty Pistyll Rhaeadr to make it the ultimate day out in Mid Wales.
