Winter Beauty Begins On The Old Man Of Coniston

A Monday morning, a fresh cold November morning. Frost producing clear blue skies above and a first bit of snow on the Lake District mountains over yonder. It was time to get some admin done then spend an afternoon gander up The Old Man of Coniston. A mountain I have enjoyed on many an occasion and most definitely in such an array of weather conditions.

The Old Man of Coniston (or otherwise known as Coniston Old Man) may not be in the elite highest of summits in altitude terms but the views and terrain for me ranks it right up there as a must do and see. Nestled right at the Southern end of the Lake District the position gives for vistas up and down the North West England. Those that merely drive up the M6 Northbound will have seen it as one of the first sights of mountains.

Looking South, and on a clear day, you can see over Morecambe Bay, plus on a haze free day too you can clearly see Blackpool Tower and The Big One. Eastwards you cannot miss The Pennines, Howgills and coming closer the Helvellyn Range. Northwards has Scafell Pike standing tall above England. Windermere and Coniston Water stretch out showing their watery length in full. Way down below at the foot of the mountain you can see the wonderfully quaint village of Coniston.

I had come for fresh air. I had come for escape. I had come for exercise. I got to climb in the first snow and am itching for plenty more again. Far removed from the busy paths of the mountains of green in the packed summer. Like this the mountains become your own, showing themselves in perhaps a more beautiful way. Fells, sun and snow working in natural unison to provide a feast for the eyes.

Love the fells Paul and my favourite ‘The old man of coniston ‘ rich in history and the 1st fell I ever climbed and returned on many occasions but mostly I remember returning with my wife and 2 boys !!
I never told them about mountain tarns!!!!

My Dad used to walk up Coniston Old Man with me in a papoose on his back when I was a kid 🙂 Fond memories!!
