Sweden – Stockholm, A Family City Break
When you stay in Stockholm there are a lot of great choices. Our first time we stayed at The Grand…
The Scandinavian nation of Sweden has thousands of coastal islands and inland lakes. The eastern capital, Stockholm, and southwestern cities of Gothenburg and Malmö, are all coastal.
Stockholm is built on 14 islands and has more than 50 bridges. The country also has vast boreal forests and glaciated mountains. Did you know that Stockholm even has a museum dedicated to all things ABBA? Since their win at the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, the band has paved the way for more successful Swedish acts.
Sweden has quite a small population compared to its vast size, as one of the largest European countries. There are ample open spaces, forests, over 90,000 lakes, and more than 3,000 kilometres of sea coastline. The opportunity for outdoor pursuits and activities is, as you can imagine, innumerable.
A relaxed atmosphere exists throughout the city and coffee breaks are so important that they have a special word for them, ‘fika’. So how about making time for fika, with a tasty fresh cinnamon roll. In fact, Nordics are at the top of the list of the biggest coffee drinkers in the world.
Traditional foods include game, reindeer and of course their world-famous meatballs, you may have tasted them at a Swedish IKEA closer to home.
Design is another notable skill here. There’s even a design district in Stockholm. The general idea is to be super functional while being eco-friendly, and simplicity is key.
If planning a visit to Stockholm, The Vaxholm Fortress Museum is a fascinating place to discover more of area’s history. It’s located in the main buildings around the central area of Vaxholm fortress on the island, and ferries run regularly from the quay.
A rich culture and history is an important part of being Swedish, and even in cities their planning always allows for green spaces to be maintained everywhere.
