Norway is part of Scandinavia, which also includes Sweden and Denmark – 3 Nordic countries located in Europe. The country of Norway is legendary for its Viking history and heritage. You can discover more about its history in the capital city, Oslo, where preserved 9th-century Viking ships are displayed at Oslo’s Viking Ship Museum.
The Kingdom of Norway, as it is officially known, is very mountainous, covering around two thirds of the country. The highest population live in or around the capital where you’ll find plenty of museums to explore the country’s rich culture and history.
Hiking, fishing and skiing are very popular tourist activities in Norway. Lillehammer’s Olympic resort is not only famous for its skiing and bobsleigh, but the ski resort town in southern Norway is also home to Maihaugen Open-Air Museum where it’s possible to see buildings dating back to 1200s. The Norwegian Olympic Museum has exhibits from Lillehammer’s 1994 Winter Olympics. Another excellent opportunity for a memorable visit is a stay in an ice hotel.
A diverse country comprised of fjords on the western coast, Norway has the highest concentration of fjords in the world.
There is plenty of city night life in the capital, Oslo, and for more adventurous and experienced visitors, snow-capped mountains and glaciers, to explore. You can even cross the Arctic circle.
For one country, the weather and conditions are extremely varied from one place to another.
The most famous walk in Norway is probably Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, as it translates to English. The peak is a 25-metre-wide viewing platform created by nature that looks over Lysefjord, before plunging vertically 650m down to the water below.
If you are looking for excitement and an adrenaline rush, the place to visit is Voss. It is known as the adventure capital of Norway. Situated deep in the heart of the fjords, you can participate in hiking, rafting, sky diving and many other extreme sports, especially those involving skiing in the winter.
Cruises are an excellent way to travel around the magnificent coast of Arctic Circle Norway. In fact, the North Cape, is the most northern point in mainland Europe. Further around the coast, you reach Kirkenes, the point of return as far as the Northern Coast of Norway goes, for if you go any further you’ll reach the Russian border.
The northern lights are another spectacular sight you may be able to enjoy if you are lucky enough to have the right weather conditions. The nearer you are to the North Pole ,the better chance you have of seeing them.
A fascinating and beautifully rugged country with some of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences, Norway has much to offer.
