Day 2 and it feels I have done/seen so much already. This morning was up and ready for the 20 minute ferry crossing to Herm Island. What a remarkable place to set foot on. One and a half mile long and less than a half mile wide this island has so much to offer. No cars, just pure natural splendour. On arrival I was met by Lesley Bailey whom lives on the island. Incidentally there are just 60 permanent residents who live there and nobody is allowed to live there unless working towards the upkeep and running of the island. Lesley gave me a perfect introduction to what I can do, see, explore and gave me the perfect starting point.
The first thing to do for me was a hike around the full coast! Terrific. A walk for all abilities and every turn producing view after view, inland or looking out to sea. Cliff tops, beaches and bays. Loved it! Amazing how these hidden white sanded bays are so so quiet but breathtaking!
Right in the centre of the island is a springtime treasure. A short woodland walk, but within this woodland lies the biggest and purest bluebell population I myself have seen. So hard to justify in photo.
After the miles comes refreshment and there is lots of choice by the harbour with tavern, hotel and gift shops, all is taken care of. Later in the afternoon it was back to Guernsey. And as you approach St Peter Port from the water you get a real sense of its grandness. Built up from the waterside, old buildings rising up before you from the harbour, boats in front. Quite obviously the busiest part of Guernsey but busy as I know it is not.
So, into the evening and off to the west and Cobo Bay, for the sunset. Wow! People had been telling me about this for 2 days and yes, they were right, it is a stunning sunset. You could watch it from the bay wall as I did or choices from in front of the pub, fish and chips shop or hotel. The photos below show what kind of sunset I had today.
Tomorrow? More island hopping, across to Sark and more miles underfoot I am sure, looking forward to it 🙂
avant de tomber difficilement à Rennes (ah, si seulement toute
Incredible photos. One never tires of beautiful sunsets and beautiful sunset photos.
I read Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society last year and this brings that story to life. Wow. Thanks, Paul!
