Yosemite, A Dream Realised

Yosemite is a place that I have dreamed of visiting for many years. I finally got the opportunity to pay a very quick visit recently. Only having a couple of free days in San Francisco, I was quick to book a hotel room and rent a car. Unable to get a room in Yosemite National Park, I ended up staying in Oakhurst. A couple of mistakes that I made were not appreciating quite how far away the visitors centre was from my hotel and the second was not realising that I needed snow chains on my car to carry...

NOLA Nights

New Orleans is a city that pulses with energy, exuding life and supreme coolness with every southern-soaked beat. Me and my friend Hayley based ourselves at the India House Hostel for our stay – a decision fuelled by wanting to make the trip as cheap as possible, rather than because of the luxury it offered, but it actually turned out to be a great choice. With a large communal area, swimming pool and brilliantly greasy, good-value breakfast, it was a really sociable place, where pre-drinking around the large picnic-bench style tables meant you met other travellers easily. Unbeknownst to...

Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve

In previous posts I’ve shown you my experience at Bodega Bay and the Harbor Seals at Goat Rock Beach. Now it’s time for me to head inland; crossing Russian River on my way to Guerneville and the Armstrong Redwoods, State Natural Reserve. The Redwoods, Sequoia sempervirens, covers an area of 805 acres, so I was only going to manage to see a small part of it today. I started walking just after 3pm and was totally awestruck by their enormity, getting neck ache trying to see their canopies. The tallest tree in the park is The Parson Jones Tree,...

Harbor Seals at Goat Rock Beach, Sonoma County

In a previous post I wrote about Bodega Bay; it’s now time to travel a little further North along the meandering coastal road to Goat Rock Beach. This beach is on a sand spit formed where the Russian River flows into the sea. It’s actually wedged in between the Russian River and the Pacific Ocean, just below the town of Jenner. It only takes about twenty minutes to reach Goat Rock Beach which is one of the many ocean beaches that form part of The Sonoma Coast State Park. A flock of Pelicans keep me company as I drive...

California – A Trip Out To Bodega Bay

I asked a friend recently for some ideas for things to do and places to see outside the City of San Francisco. He suggested heading out towards Bodega Bay. Bodega Bay is situated about forty miles Northwest of San Francisco and is a very pleasant drive. You head out over the Golden Gate Bridge on Highway 101 and if you’re like me you’ll come off at the first possible chance and head cross country. I passed through some lovely small towns and villages, which gave me a geniune warmth for the area. On arrival at Bodega Bay I found...

Camden, Maine: Way More Than Expected

Sometimes I get in the mood to go somewhere I haven’t been. It’s kind of hard to find a new place to visit in New England, since I’ve been to every state, most multiple times. I wasn’t expecting much when I decided to visit Maine again, since I’ve gone to the ocean often. I decided to go a bit further north than usual this time, to Camden. Knowing nothing about Camden, I rented a cabin next to the ocean. It was actually much cheaper than I thought I would have to pay this time of year. I figured it...
