Whilst aboard the Hurtigruten, cruising around the magnificent coast of Arctic Circle Norway, you get to do some extremely interesting and refreshing excursions. I have so far mentioned the North Cape from my trip but further around the coast you reach Kirkenes, the point of return as far as the Northern Coast of Norway goes. Any further East is into Russia, was time to get the boots on for a walk in this truly winter filled area. The sun doesn’t rise here in mid winter but we had some light for a couple of hours after docking to take in...Read More
I was aboard the Hurtigruten and had a whole plethora of excursions to take part in on our cruise around the Arctic coast of Norway. Where should I start the series of articles from my time aboard? But at the top! The North Cape, at the top of mainland Europe. The North Cape is one of those spots that produces a feeling that is hard to describe unless you stand there yourself. 71 degrees North, you stand at the famous globe sculpture, looking North out to the cold blue Barents sea. Knowing, there is only the Svalbard Islands between you...Read More
The husky’s steely blue eyes are trained on mine. Each bark turns the frozen air to steam. He strains forward on his chains, snarling. I hold a harness limply in my hands. We both know I’m not the one in charge here. On the drive to the husky dog yard, I’d stared out at the snow-covered mountains and deep-cut valleys of Norway’s Rondane National Park. My imagination wandered to the day ahead: reclining in a sled, pulled by a band of friendly huskies. I arrive to a reality check. You don’t recline in the sled; you stand. The huskies...Read More
Well, all good things must come to an end, but this was not without a great day to equal all others. We had rested overnight in the far north town of Alta and were ready for a fun packed day. First up….. Snow Scooter Safari What a hoot! Suited up and on the trail we revved up. Cold cold air blasting the face, all negated by speed, turns and views as we wound upwards. As we reached a high plateau the wind was whipping up the snow and blowing it across the land in the sunlight, was surreal. After...Read More
Now it was time to go North, really North, and by boat! We were back on the Hurtigruten and up the coast once more. In the morning after the sunrise the cliffs, covered in ice and snow looked spectacular. As midday approached the ships Captain informed us that soon we would be approaching The North Cape – The Northernmost point of mainland Europe. Only the Svalbard Islands seperate it from the North Pole. What was making it more of an adventure was the fact that a storm had blown in. All passengers raced to the deck (very well wrapped...Read More
Incredible! Throughout this whole trip to Norway we have seen and done so many things and each has been an amazing experience. Even here right now up in the far North at Alta there was one thing we could not arrange or book… to see the Northern lights. Well, all things came together for us perfectly, we were having a tour round the Igloo Hotel and having dinner when suddenly …. there they were! Up above us and before us the green glow formed and Wow! Yes! we had our light show! Words can’t describe being there watching them live,...Read More
