Hobbiton – A Very Real Idyll

My boyfriend is an out and proud Lord of the Rings geek; he’s read the books back to front, watched the films countless times and even owns a Gandalf hat. This fact means that I myself have spent many a night watching all three films, extended editions naturally, whilst he irritates me by quoting whole passages of dialogue in my ear. And I must confess, I too am a convert; I love Tolkein’s world and in my day-dreaming moments find myself hankering for a life baking, eating and throwing parties in my own little hobbit hole. Thus, when I...

Queenstown – Nostalgia On The Lake Aboard TSS Earnslaw

Queenstown sits on the edge of the great Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand. And after the adventure on Bob’s Peak it was time to get out on the water and take in more of what was on offer. I will go onto the adventurous water activities shortly but this day was for relaxing and taking in the surroundings. What better way than on board one of only a handful of coal-fired steamships left in use on the planet. In fact the only coal-fired steamship in operation within the southern hemisphere.. The TSS Earnslaw. The Earnslaw took her maiden voyage on the...

Queenstown – Adrenalin Adventures On Bob’s Peak

Looking out of the hotel window above the Queenstown skyline sits a peak that is blanketed in the deep green of fir trees. At the bottom the Skyline Gondola awaits you to take adventure lovers to the top. If mountain biking is your thing...

Queenstown – Calm Beauty Behind The Adventure

Queenstown, New Zealand. The ‘adventure capital of the world’! Associated with extreme bungy jumping, speed boating along canyons, skiing and so much more to get the blood pumping. However I took the time to engage in some of the stunning calmness in, amongst and around all that. Nestled on the banks of an inlet of the gorgeous Lake Wakatipu, South Island, Queenstown can be widely viewed as a resort town. Actually I found it much more quaint and smaller than I had imagined it was going to be, in a good way. There is no end to choices for...

Milford Sound – A Memorable Experience

What a feature it is that awaits you at the end of the Milford Trail… Milford Sound in all its glory! As far as travel destinations go it is one of the top ‘go to’ spots when visiting New Zealand. All of those that have had the pleasure of  actually being there will know what all the fuss is about. Yes. It is spectacular, crikey yes. Even Rudyard Kipling described it as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’. Nestled in the south of Fiordland, New Zealand this spectacular waterway is one huge 15 kilometre long monument to nature in...

Milford Track Day Four – Paradise To The End

Alas it was the final day of this most beautiful walk. After the beauty in all directions walking up the Clinton Valley on days one and two, over the Mackinnon Pass on Day three it was time to head down to the final stop at Sandfly Point, where the trail meets Milford Sound! A taster for this side of the pass was given on day three heading down from the pass. Stepping back into the fairy-tale like scenes within the forest canopy the path may have been heavily downward but the river beside did too. Producing some spectacular waterfalls...
