Wasdale – Drama and Beauty In The Lake District

It’s the most dramatic part of the Lakes isn’t it? The highest mountain, the deepest lake, the smallest church, and the biggest liars all hail from here. If you want to experience some of the extremes that the Lakes District has to offer, then Wasdale is the place to head to. Whilst the crowds flock to Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick, Wasdale offers visitors a sense of isolation. If you want to disappear from civilisation for a few days, then Wasdale can provide this service for you. Of course, given that the valley is home to England’s highest mountain, Scafell...

A Trip Through Seaside Towns and Lakes of West Cumbria

On a recent family holiday we decided to stay in a little village called Beckermet, West Cumbria. We stayed in a converted forge which was beautiful and compact, comfortable, but a little bit creaky! We love the Lake District and usually stay in Hawkshead as it is more central to all the popular attractions i.e. Windermere, Ambleside and Coniston. However, we decided to venture further West this time to stay in this quaint little village. Beckermet is situated near the coast between Egremont and Seascale. It is only 3 kms from Sellafield but this is only visible from higher...

Walking In Dentdale

I absolutely love cottage holidays. A converted farmhouse in the middle of lush countryside, roaring fires, home cooked food, fine wine, and good company. You cannot beat it. And best of all is the walking which is on tap every time you open the front door and step out into the great outdoors. The Yorkshire Dales has so many options for exploring and walking. There are some great long distance trails; the Yorkshire Three Peaks is ever popular as walkers try and complete the 24 miles and peaks of Ingleborough, Pen-y-ghent and Whernside in under 12 hours. The Coast...

Walking in a Winter Wonderland – Lake District

There is something about snowfall that triggers childlike excitement in most people. Those of us who love walking in the mountains are no different, and the first snow fall of the year means that many of us are packing up our cars and heading off to the hills in search of some snow capped mountain adventure. Of course winter walking requires a different level of planning and preparation but that’s all part of the fun. Dusting off your under-utilised crampons and ice axe after pulling them out of the loft.  Trying to work out which combination of layering systems...

Appleby Castle – Above and Around (Video)

The snow had fallen on the Peaks all around, the Pennines and the Cumbrian fells. A wonderful backdrop for a wonderful weekend away to one of my favourite places, Appleby Castle. As I have shown in a previous post, the castle is a unique and super place to stay in Cumbria, full of history, full of character. I decided to take my drone on this weekend to get more unique views and clips…. Walking the grounds of the castle is perfect for unwinding, I shall show you more in a future post. Rows of yew trees, red squirrels scurrying...

Appleby Castle – A Stay In History

Appleby Castle, packed with history reaching back to the Roman age, and carrying on through to the Normans, great Kings, the Clifford family (especially lady Anne Clifford), the civil war and much more. Over the hundreds of years Appleby Castle retains remnants of its early history combined with how each age has left its mark up until the present day. A castle that has kept a lot of its historic soul, a castle that you stay in and feel the ambience that you would expect. A place to see and learn, a place to experience the past, a place...

Over Kirkstone Pass in the Vauxhall Mokka X

In Cumbria there is a road that captures the imagination of all who drive over it. Kirkstone Pass! It is the highest pass in the Lake District, UK with what you could call a major road over it. It is quite simply a stunning drive whatever the weather. The gradient reaches 1:4 so be prepared for low gears, but also be prepared for amazing views. The altitude at the top of the pass is 1,489 feet (454m). As the driver you of course need to concentrate on these kind of roads, but it was a great opportunity to enjoy it in...

Cumbria Adventures in The Vauxhall Mokka X

When someone asks me if I fancy a challenge or an adventure then those that know me I can never resist. So, when Vauxhall challenged me to have as much adventure as possible in 48 hours with the new Mokka X I was sure to say ‘bring it on, let’s go!’ Of course Cumbria is one of my favourite places on earth so where better to combine the adventures, driving, views and miles. It was time to head off to the Lake District. I must say the drive up there was made a whole lot easier than I am...
