Newfoundland - East Coast Trail 1

I am very fortunate to live in Newfoundland. I’m surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean with miles and miles of wilderness to discover.  One of the trail systems I have been exploring is called The East Coast Trail (ECT).

This past weekend, I spent an hour exploring the Half-Moon Brook area nestled between Flatrock and Pouch Cove. The blue skies were calling me out of my condo.  The clean, crisp air and constant sounds of waves crashing soon transported me to a place of tranquility and relaxation.  Heaven on Earth!

The East Coast Trail Association is a member-based, volunteer-driven non-profit organization and a registered charity.  It has been very dedicated to developing 540 kilometers of footpaths while preserving the natural beauty of the areas.  265 kilometers of the trail have been fully developed with detailed maps.  There are a total of 24 mapped branches that range from easy, moderate, difficult and strenuous.  Doing a little research before you head out is advised.  Each trail has signage to guide you along just in case you wander off the beaten path.

What to expect while you are on the trail?  Almost anything!  You may be greeted by a variety of wildlife – from birds, to foxes, to moose to whales.  You have to remember you are walking in their habitat.  Most wildlife will keep their distance.  Just be aware of your surroundings and keep your eyes open.  A camera is a must!  You might snap that perfect photo that you can enlarge for your home.

Dress appropriately.  Always pack a windbreaker and wear suitable footwear.  As you meander along the trail, you will go from inland to coastal pathways.

You will experience breathtaking views of the deep blue sea with the waves raging over the ragged rocks…seabirds chattering as they pursue their daily meal…waterfalls cascading over steep, sheer cliffs.

Sit down, take in your surroundings.  Bring along some snacks and enjoy a break with a view matched by none.  But, leave not trace!  If you can carry it to your destination, you can take your trash back with you…be considerate of others who will follow in your steps.
