Hiking High In The Troodos Mountains of Cyprus
Perfect, absolutely perfect.. Away from the resorts, high in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus I had it all… Scenery, blue skies, mountains, wooded paths, warmth, and total peace. Miles and miles of trails and climbs to choose from. Spoilt for choice but never a bad choice to be made. The order of the day was the Madari Trail. As great a 13km circular hike as you will find. Ups, downs, wide ridges and at the summit of Adelfoi (1612 m), the island’s 2nd highest summit, you get access to the most spectacular 360 panoramic views over the island.
One of the things that struck me was that we set off mid morning yet the whole way round we did not meet a single other person, a true sense of peace in paradise indeed. Lining your path though as you gradually climb is an abundance of green. The variety of trees and shrubs is astonishing, actually is hard to keep up with leaning them all it is so rich. Cedar, oak, juniper, strawberry, wild rose, pine and much much more.
The pathway up is not extreme and although a long walk it is not beyond the many who have the time, plus I assure you that you will be stopping to admire the views so much you get lots of rest that way
The 360 view at the top I mentioned lays all before you. One way you have the snow topped peak of Mt Olympus, the island’s highest peak, whilst in all other directions you can see mountain after mountain, the flats at the bottom of the range, the hillside villages, vineyards and even over yonder to the high lands of Northern Cyprus.
The start point for this trail is the mountain saddle of Doxa si o Theos, from the locality of Kyperounta follow signs for Spilia until you reach the saddle at the top and the trailhead car park . But please look out for many of the other trails in this range. A whole walking holiday can be made from it. I know I want more myself. Also as a break from the dry heat below you can venture to the snow of Mt Olympus… There is skiing and tobogganing to have fun with in season. Not bad at all for the Mediteranean. When you book your flights to Cyprus don’t just head for the beach or pool, take your boots and take in the miles and views of inner Cyprus.
