aphrodite nature trail views

What a wonderful start to a trip to Cyprus, Day one it was boots on and off over to the far West of the island, the Akamas Peninsula, for the Aphrodite (the Greek goddess of love) Nature Trail.

This whole area of Cyprus has a very strong connection with the legend of Aphrodite, the daughter of Zeus, and her lover Adonis. Today a circular trail takes you round the North coast of the peninsular, up over the sea facing hills and down through the trees and tracks. All the while you are surrounded by sun, sea, flowers of such variety plus trees in rich green. Rich smells of shrubs and thyme for example line the path and the will to stop and take in the hit on the senses cannot be ignored I can tell you.

Lizards scurrying around, poppies sat in groups, oaks over 600 years old, there was no denying this really was a nature trail. In fact I now need to go brush upon my flowers it seems.

The turquoise sea below as you climb,.especially as I had left a very wet and grey UK the day before gave the scene a truly romantic feel. The trail was so quiet, no crowds… this was the Cyprus I wanted to see and more I shall see like this too. If you normally take your holidays to Cyprus or are doing for the first time then instead of just staying at the beach then take the time to explore the nature on foot. Thrilling 🙂

At the end of the trail there is the Baths of Aphrodite, the place that she was supposed to have seduced Adonis. A hidden little cove of water that brings people searching for legends, history or simply a beautiful natural escape.

Even as we drove to the next destination we stopped for a view looking down over Paphos. Now that is a rest stop with a view.

Over the next few days I will have the pleasure of hiking all across this island and learning along the way. I cannot wait!

  3. My husband and I spent a month in Cyprus 30 years ago when our daughter got married in Nicosia. It is a beautiful place to visit. Most of our sightseeing was by car. We didn’t hike as much as we should have. I am looking forward to our next visit and will take more time to hike and smell the wonderful flowers. The people of Cyprus are very hospitable. Norma

Fantastic pictures Paul! They bring back loads of memories of my childhood in Cyprus (early teens) – especially when I did the ‘Horseshoe Hike’ from the golf balls in Episkopi to the golf balls at the top of Troodos. Happy Days!
